The Best Men's Fall/Winter 2024 Fashion Trends Straight Off the Runways

Tailored looks, particularly involving suits, vests, and trousers, tend to be a staple in the world of menswear, but it seems this season more than ever, designers are presenting looks with sharp, structured silhouettes, breathing new life into the runway staple. With a crisp-looking line of suits and vests from Dolce & Gabbana and a layered gray number by Giorgio Armani, tailored suiting is looking fresher than ever. 

Dubbed "grandpa-core" on TikTok, Twitter, and other online spaces, this style leans into sweater vests, colored cardigans, belted high-waisted trousers, and loafers, all of which were in abundance on the runways this season. While colored knitwear is often a focus of the look, many brands leaned into neutrals this season, opting to layer beiges, browns, and white tones to create cosy, cohesive looks. 

Although cargo pants made their resurgence several years ago, it seems the cargo aesthetic is here to stay. Classic cargo pants remain as popular as ever, but recently, cargo skirts and cargo jeans have made their way into mainstream view, and the utilitarian look proved its power this season, with pockets appearing anywhere in abundance from jacket fronts to trousers. With this trend, designers took a chance to toy with scale, with oversized pockets appearing front and center on JW Anderson trousers to an assortment of quilted cargo pockets on S.S. Daley jackets. 

Designers showed off the cosy trend in a variety of styles, ranging from the tailored, contemporary faux fur coat on the Gucci runway to the oversized, '70s-inspired piece by Todd Snyder. While the faux fur pieces were widely unique in colour—exhibited in a myriad of neutrals, ranging from cool tan to honey brown, classic black, and charcoal gray—one thing the designers had in common this season was their penchant for the double-breasted coat, a style seen across the runways. 

Pinstripes, wide awning stripes, and banker stripes were all in abundance on the men's Fall/Winter 2024 runways, appearing anywhere from a traditional tailored suit, à la Giorgio Armani or Dolce & Gabbana, to Gucci's sleek patent leather trench coat. While some looks utilized the pattern as a simple element of visual interest, others relied on stripes as a way to create texture, as seen on Fendi's shimmery gray top, where stripes were etched into the fabric, adding depth and dimension to the look. 

It's no surprise that a plethora of leather was spotted on the runways this season, especially given the reputations of many participating fashion houses as masterful leatherworkers, but few were prepared for the ample amount of polished leather looks in particular. While some leather looks were finished with a simple, subtle sheen, others were polished to patent leather perfection. Appearing on the runway in a rainbow of shades, including red, yellow, green, and a range of traditional neutrals, designers presented leather in a variety of shapes and forms, ranging from Gucci's ultra-polished, deep yellow matching leather blazer and trousers to JW Anderson's emerald green patent leather mini-trench look. 

Sequins, metallics, and glitter aren't just the internet's current microtrend—these eye-catching details are here to stay, according to the Fall/Winter 2024 runways. Ranging from Dolce & Gabbana's maximalist embroidered sequins and shimmery beading to the subtle sheen of a glitter-woven suit on the Fendi runway, designers presented bold, glamourous looks and pared-back, minimalistic styles alike. 

Dubbed the It girl colour of last fall, cherry red was everywhere last season, making a statement on the runways, red carpets, and street-style moments, and this season, the bright, bold hue has made its way to menswear. Cherry red remained on top in terms of the sheer abundance in which it was seen, but burgundy and other adjacent red tones followed close behind, often seen utilized in sultry silks or luscious leathers. 

Designers like JW Anderson and S.S. Daley shook up the runways this season with the inclusion of pieces like skirts, dresses, and sheer stockings, creating dynamic looks by utilizing juxtapositions of texture, color, and forms in their respective styles. Skorts were also a major presence on the runway this season, seen in Pharrell's American West-inspired style in Louis Vuitton Men's collection and the "attitude of liberation" that Silvia Venturini Fendi had in mind while designing Fendi's menswear collection. 

Abundant on the runways this season were layers—and lots of them. To showcase multiple pieces at once and provide additional depth, texture, and colour to different runway looks, designers leaned into layering this season, as seen on the Auralee and Louis Vuitton runways, where models were outfitted in vibrant shirts and jackets with long, oversized coats draped over them, with eye-catching details like zippers and collars adding visual interest to the looks.
