Exclusive interview: Lenny Kravitz is the Star of Saint Laurent's New Fragrance
Lenny Kravitz, the star of Saint Laurent's new fragrance, talks about his career and future projects.
Cultivating countless talents, there is no doubt that Lenny Kravitz is one of today's greatest artists. Through his messages of love and peace, over the decades he has sold millions of albums, collected awards and amassed a legion of fans, tattooing his name in rock history.
For Lenny, growing up in a busy environment in the 1970s fully influenced his personal and professional construction. Owner of hits such as "It Ain't Over Till It's Over", "Fly Away" (1998) and "Again" (2000), and appearances in films such as The Hunger Games and Precious - A Story of Hope, Kravitz doesn't hide his interest genuine by the world of fashion and proves that his personality goes far beyond the stage and cinema.
After starring in the photos of Saint Laurent 's Autumn/Winter 2020 collection, he marks another chapter of his journey alongside the French maison as spokesperson and star of the campaign video for fragrance Y eau de parfum. In an exclusive interview with L'Officiel Hommes Brasil, he tells a little about his journey here, his biggest challenges and his plans for the future. Check out!
The fragrance Y campaign shows him as a determined and dreamy man. How was your journey as an artist here? What is it like to look back and see that all your determination has turned you into a rock star?
“My journey as an artist has been wonderful, it's the joy of my life. It all started when I was very young and I was fortunate to be in New York City in the 1970s, when things were extremely vibrant, unexpected and powerful. I had the opportunity to see, hear and learn from many - and great - artists. From musicians, dancers, writers, architects... Today I keep myself open to my creativity, that's what I am and it's a joy. very blessed to have the opportunity to express myself the way I do and fortunate to have the world share my music."
The campaign also talks about dreams and challenges. What was your biggest challenge in life?
"I believe that when I was very young my biggest challenge was making sure that I would continue to be who I am, because there were so many people trying to take me in different directions. ''You must be like this, you must do this, you must do that...". For the money people expect you to do things that aren't truly your essence. They promise you success and of course when you're young you dream of succeeding, but I've always been clear inside that I shouldn't do that. Everything should happen in an authentic and organic way. So, it was a challenge to keep me in that direction, because I was 16 years old and I slept on people's couches, sometimes even in cars. I needed the money and I wanted success, but not that way."
How important is fragrance in your life?
"A fragrance is a memory, it's something very powerful. I can remember when I was a child, the smell I smelled of my mother's perfume when she was getting ready to go out. The smell of my grandfather, the smell of my grandmother's kitchen , from the smell of New York City in childhood. Also from the Bahamas, that fresh scent and sea breeze... The smell of things brings you memories and can transport you to specific moments easily. So fragrance will always be important in my life ."
You are a real inspiration to people. But who is your inspiration? An artist or someone close to you… Who inspired you to be who you are today?
"Many people have influenced and inspired me since I was born. Countless musicians, artists, people outside the business... But I can say that life and God are the essence of everything... So, life is what truly inspires me . The gift of life and the whole experience of that journey."
How were your days in the pandemic? Has your creative process been affected in any way?
“It was great because I stayed in the Bahamas, and I'm still here. This is the place where I can really connect with nature, take it easy on myself, keep quiet, listen to myself. been a gift to be able to be here."
In these times of seclusion, have you rescued or created any habit that you intend to keep in your routine?
"The habit of noticing when you should take time for yourself, keeping quiet, thinking things over. That's important."
You have a beautiful farm in Brazil. What was the reason for choosing the country?
"I am very passionate about Brazil. I was once there on tour and I was totally attracted to the people, the culture, the music, art and the feeling they put in things. But the environment is everything. Going to the farm makes that I feel the magic of being in the middle of nowhere. The mountains, the waterfalls, the animals, the trees bearing fruit, the vegetables, the beauty and simplicity of people, the connection with the planet and with life... For everything this I couldn't resist. It was one of the most magical places I've ever been."
What are your projects for the future?
''During the time I've been here, I've finished two new albums, so I plan to release a lot of songs next year. Basically being active, God willing. I also did a movie a few months ago, which will be out next year as well. So it's going to be amazing to continue on this journey!''
